This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like typical physical horror, but beneath Together exists a profound examination about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple face the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they still love each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
