Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The buzz surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio clarified that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team might be designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
