Crew Member Shares Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also carried well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a public message, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.
She noted that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the experience, including increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
Flight Details
The fully automated spacecraft departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the edge of outer space.
The team of pioneers also included leaders in multiple disciplines.
The company behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
